An anime adaptation made by Tokyo Movie Shinsha aired from October 2006 to September 2007 and had 50 episodes. The first OVA was released on March 14, 2012 and the second OVA was released in May 2012. In 2009, Funimation Entertainment licensed the episodes for an English-language release in North America. The series began airing on the Funimation Channel from October 26, 2009 until May 25, 2010.

This year's 47th issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine is announcing on Wednesday that an original video anime (OVA) project of Shun Matsuena's Shijō Saikyō no Deshi Kenichi (History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi) manga has been green-lit. The anime studio Brains Base will produce the project. More details and the release date information will be provided in future issues of Weekly Shonen Sunday.
The manga already inspired a television anime series that Funimationreleased in North America.

An special preview has been released for the upcoming 4th OVA of the Japanese anime series called 'History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi.' A 12-minute preview trailer has been released for the upcoming fourth original video animation (OVA) known as 'History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi' aka 'Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple.' This OVA is going to be shipped with a limited edition of volume 53 of the ongoing manga of the same name. If you are into martial arts-themed anime, you may want to check this OVA out. From what the preview shows, this is one of the OVAs that set up the major D & D Tournament Arc. As the anime series ended with the Ragnarok Arc, the manga continued on. The previous three OVAs also set up for the D & D Tournament Arc as well focusing on the many characters that would be featured in this story.You can get volume 53 on September 18.History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi centers on Kenichi Shirahama who started out as a 'weak-legged' boy who often got bullied. He ends up being a disciple of the Ryozanpaku and goes through a grueling training process which is comically considered 'cruel and unusual.' While he has no talent, Kenichi proves that hard work and constant training will surpass talent. Thus, with his new skills, Kenichi gains the undivided attention of many people.
